36 weeks
Here is our baby at 36 weeks. Note that the baby is sucking its left thumb, then has one of its feet by its eye, then its right hand in a fist above the foot. The baby is still in the Frank Breech position, so that means a C-section for us. Baby has also been getting some raging cases of hiccups lately, and even though Jon and I have explained that it would have fewer hiccups if it just turned upside down, baby is not in the mood to flip.
I wonder if the baby will sleep like this once its born. And, when cuddling into the "fetal position" will our child stick its feet in its face?
Baby weighs 6 lbs and 5 ounces, so its very much on track even though the baby will be making an early arrival.

Book Reviews

Easy Labor, suprisingly enough, is not a work of fiction. Written by an anesthesiologist, this book discusses every single type of pain management and pain relief moms can use during labor. It gives input from doctors, nurses, midwives and moms. Easy Labor provides an unbiased look at alternative and medical intervention for pain during labor.

What to Expect When You're Expecting gives a general overview of pregnancy in a question and answer format.
This book was a good source of medical facts and answered many general questions.

Knocked Up, by Rebecca Eckler, is a humorous account of Rebecca's pregnancy that reads like a novel. This book gave me a welcome respite from the facts and figures of some of the other pregnancy books. I read Knocked Up during my first trimester, when I needed a laugh more than I needed to read more medical jargon.

Baby Bargains drills down and gives you the scoop on which baby gear is worth the extra money, and what you can skip altogether. I found it to be a great resource for choosing furniture, toys, car seats, breast pumps, and all the other things that were totally unfamiliar to me as a first-time parent. Jon and I got a kick out of seeing all the parents in Babies R Us clutching their copy and referencing the book when making a purchase.

Written by a mother of four, The Girlfriends Guide to Pregnancy is a practical and humorous book about what's going on with baby, mom & dad's bodies and minds during pregnancy. It deals more with feelings and emotions than other pregnancy guides, discussing your husband's fears and telling moms-t0-be to check their vanity at the door for a while.

Shopaholic & Baby, by Sophie Kinsella, is part of Kinsella's series about Becky Bloomwood, a Londoner with fabulous taste and a wee bit of a shopping compulsion. Becky's credit card bills and letters from the bank always make me feel better about myself.

Jenny McCarthy's Belly Laughs tells the story of Jenny's pregnancy. Jenny shares all the things nobody ever told her about pregnancy, and frankly, nobody ever told me, either. Jenny tells her story in her trademark gross-out style, but with pregancy as a backdrop, it doesn't have its usual shock-value. This book made me realize that motherhood means getting past my usual gross-out threshold.

Your Pregnancy Week By Week gives weekly updates on what's happenning with both baby and mom. The chapters are short and easy to understand. I also downloaded the audiobook to my iPod and listened to it during my commute.

Buff Moms-to-Be was great for me to use as an exercise guide during pregnancy. They should put a warning on the chest-press exercise that it shouldn't be done after the 7th month or so. I almost had to get help from the staff at the gym when I couldn't get up from the bench!

35 weeks: "Your baby is very uncooperative"

34 weeks
The baby now weighs about 4 3/4 pounds (actual weight from Friday's sonogram: 5lbs, 4 oz) (like your average cantaloupe) and is almost 18 inches long. Her fat layers — which will help regulate her body temperature once she's born — are filling her out, making her rounder. Her skin is also smoother than ever. Her central nervous system is maturing and her lungs are continuing to mature as well. If you've been nervous about preterm labor, you'll be happy to know that babies born between 34 and 37 weeks who have no other health problems generally do fine. They may need a short stay in the neonatal nursery and may have a few short-term health issues, but in the long run, they usually do as well as full-term babies.

The week of many doctor's appointments
Tuesday: OB & Sonogram
This was a regularly scheduled sonogram with an emergency visit to my OB. I felt like I was going to pass out, and so I saw I had my blood pressure taken and blood drawn and saw Dr. Picco. I've had some rapid pulse episodes that have made me feel really sick the last 2 weeks. She recommended I see a cardiologist and also visit my dermatologist about the rash on my legs.
Wednesday: Dermatologist
I felt like my legs were on FIRE! Dr. Gottleib didn't think they were that bad and told me none of the usual oral medications would be OK with the pregnancy. So, instead I have some perscription creams. They're not really doing much. Seriously, do these legs look not that bad?
I think they're disgusting. Thanks to modern technology, we have documented the crazy rash and I can come back to it when I start my litany of problemos, "When I was pregnant with you, do you know what I went through?"
Thursday: Cardiologist
On Thursday, I saw the award-winning Cardiologist Susan Bennett. I had an EKG, and everything looks OK, I just had a rapid pulse and she heard my heart murmur. She's not too worried, it might just be the effects of being pregnant and in the heat. I'm going back for some more tests and monitoring, but I probably just need to "rest more and take it easy."
Friday: Sonogram #2
This week starts 2 sonograms per week. I'll be going back for my second sonogram tomorrow.

33 weeks
This week your baby weighs a little over 4 pounds (heft a pineapple) and has passed the 17-inch mark. He's rapidly losing that wrinkled, alien look and his skeleton is hardening. The bones in his skull aren't fused together, which allows them to move and slightly overlap, thus making it easier for him to fit through the birth canal. (The pressure on the head during birth is so intense that many babies are born with a conehead-like appearance.) These bones don't entirely fuse until early adulthood, so they can grow as his brain and other tissue expands during infancy and childhood.
The baby was very active today! I had some Oreos and the baby went nuts rolling, punching and kicking around. I'll have to remember that for my next ultrasound.
Mommy's friends held a baby shower this past weekend. We got lots of things the baby needs, and I saw some of my friends get really competitive about baby shower bingo!
The CRV was filled to the brim, now it's time to finally finish baby's room ... as soon as the air conditioning gets turned on ... it's hot in here!

Exercising during pregnancy
Exercise during pregnancy has been quite a challenge. First, I was too tired. Then I was on doctor's orders to take it easy while the baby calmed itself down. Then, once I was cleared to exercise, I had already lost significant tone and endurance. I turned to the series by personal trainer Sue Flemming whose workouts I used before. Her book for pregnancy titled Buff Moms to Be. I also liked carrying it around the gym during the in-between stage, wh en strangers couldn't tell if I was pregnant or just chubby. That's one of the benefits of working out during pregnancy that they don't tell you in the pregnancy books -- dragging yourself to the gym will not only make you feel good about yourself, it will also make you feel better than everyone else there. Hey, I'm only lifting a 5lb dumbell, but I'm carrying a baby, too! As I've progressed, I am using less weight, because it truly feels like I am carrying a solid weight on my belly. Pregnancy workout wardrobe is something that doesn't get talked about in the pregnancy books either. So far, I've been just wearing my biggest pants and pulling them down a little lower than usual and topping them off with one of the grande-size t-shirts that I just had to have a million of during college. Seriously, why are all my college tees size Large? What was I thinking? Why didn't anybody make me order a more fitted size? Another wardrobing issue that needed to be addressed was the sports bra. Even though I'm not near my pre-pregnancy exertion levels, my pre-pregnancy sports bras are now more useful as headbands than bras. So, I picked up a couple in the largest size that the sporting goods store carried and they fit great!

What's going on with the baby, according to http://www.thenestbaby.com/: Toughening up her immune system, with help from your antibodies.
Top 10 things going on here on the outside, according to me:
10) Started calling around to Pediatricians -- got on the schedule for a new parent orientation.
9) Got back on track with going to the gym -- a new, larger sportsbra was a big help in making that happen.
8) Saw my OB/GYN at Mass -- actually almost knocked her over when I was running outside to the ladies' room after communion. She understood. :)
7) Ordered some thank you notes so I can start being considerate of all the lovely gifts people are sending the baby.
6) Found out Fr. Shea is leaving Holy Trinity to take a Jesuit post as head something of Maryland. Have to get baby’s Baptism on his schedule before he leaves!
5) Checked out some videos and books from the library about birth and being a working mom.
4) Made room for baby -- donated 60 books and other miscelaneous items to Tossed & Found, the Junior League's annual rummage sale.
3) Discovered The Wiggle Room, a baby/maternity consignment store in Bethesda. Got a glider for 88% off!
2) Found pictures of a very cute baby on my computer at work – guess who it is!?!
1) Received an AMAZING box of baby clothes from Aunt Teri!

25 weeks
Here I am at 25 weeks. The baby is the size of an eggplant. Inside the womb, the formation of tiny capillaries is giving baby a healthy pink glow. Baby's also soaking up antibodies, getting the immune system ready for life outside the womb. Eyes are forming, and baby will soon perfect the blink -- perfect for batting those freshly grown lashes.
